Welcome
to one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean! The
Channel House is secluded
and special, a real pirates lair hidden from visitors
both from land and sea, in keeping with the long swashbuckling
tradition of these islands. Built of finest Jamaican
hardwoods
in Bermudian style by one of Provo’s first modern
white settlors, it occupies one of the finest waterfront
positions on Providenciales. Enjoy the views from the
raised deck: turquoise waters, soft white coral sands,
passing
boats, rare birdlife, and of course the Caribbean sun
in a cloudless blue sky!
The Channel House is available for rent all year round.
Despite its position and the superb specification, there
are no premiums and charges are competitive.
Few homes in the world are as unusual and magical as
Channel House. Set in 1.8 acres of mature, tropical gardens
and a mere 18 yards from the empty white coral sand beach,
the house is built on a raised platform some 12ft above
the natural ground level, catching sea breezes all year
round and allowing superb views out over remarkable turquoise
waters of the Leeward-Going-Through Channel, and on to
the ocean reefs of Grace Bay.
The impression of living in a tree house is accentuated by another remarkable
feature, an enclosed covered veranda which wraps around the entire house; fully
netted, it lets the breeze in and keeps insects out. This is a natural and effective
air conditioning system, allowing occupants to live and sleep in comfort, with
open windows, free of worry of the bugs in the night.
Wave action is gentle in the channel, and this together with the long stretch
of unspoilt and unpopulated white sand, make this beach ideal for swimming and
sunbathing. The Ocean hits the shore some 300 yards to the north; here the waves
can be ferocious, and beach erosion is evident.
Across the channel from which the house gains its name lies Mangrove Cay (pronounced ‘key’),
a part of the Princess Alexandra Nature Reserve and home to a wealth of flora
and fauna, including tree frogs, iguanas and lizards, pelicans, ospreys, herons,
flamingos, humming birds and fifty species of butterfly. At night, subtle landscape
lighting picks out the glories of the garden and its pathways, without spoiling
the romance of the star-studded Caribbean sky. The overall effect is both romantic
and magical, especially when the sun shines every day and the white coral sands
of the beach are only a few yards away.
