SURFING

East Coast

King of the Swells. The East coast boasts the most consistent surf on the island. Breaks between September and December. Small glassy surf between June and August.

Soup Bowl, the #1 spot, has been nicknamed "Sunset Beach" for the power and form it displays. Fast, powerful rights, with long walls and hollow tubes. Breaks from 2 feet to 20 feet.

Parlers, Mother of all Walls! Can break up to 40'. Best on a north or south swell. Parlers rises to the occasion. Long paddle, deep water, and thick walls. Breaks right and left.

High Rock, between Soup Bowl and Parlers. Same consistency. Right and left breaks.

Ragged Point. Hidden in a cove, Ragged Point offers waves when there are no waves. Breaks on a south swell or southeast tradewinds. Sandy bottom, no urchins. Makes it a safe break.

North Coast

Duppies -- Starting on the northern tip of the island going west, is the (in)famous Duppies -- long rights, breaking over flat coral reef bottoms. Breaks on a north swell and can get up to 10 - 15'. Strong currents heading out makes it easy to get out. Strong leashes in order.

Maycocks -- right and also left. Best from 4' up. Breaks when Duppies is breaking.

Six Men's Bay -- Off a quaint fishing village, 6 Mens offers a small left and right breaking on a big north swell. Up to 4 - 5'.

West Coast

Half Moon Fort -- long glassy rights breaking on a sand and reef bottom causing the wave to pick up speed on the reef and barrels onto the sand. Breaks on a big north swell.

Tropicana -- the steepest, hollowest, shallowest break there is. Fast rides, but can be dangerous. Fire Coral reef.

Sandy Lane -- short left, but when good is very good. Best time December - March.

South Coast

Brandons -- Thick lipped long lefts and a few rights. Hollow on the inside section. Perfect for those little tubes. Fairly consistent. Breaks on a south swell and southeast tradewinds. Best time to surf is high tide.

SURF CONDITIONS

The East Coast has the most consistent breaks on the island because it gets the Atlantic swells. Best in summer with a south wind and a northeast swell. The west coast breaks from a north swell between December and March and then perhaps only once per week, usually from strong low pressure systems in the north Atlantic. When the west coast does break it can be excellent. Generally bigger the farther north you go. A big day is 5', rarely over 8 feet, except at Duppies which gets bigger but are not clean waves because they are so far out. The south coast also breaks in the winter, rarely in the summer except for local storms and is more consistent than the west coast. The prevailing east and northeast winds favor the south and west coasts. A south or southwest wind usually summer or early fall makes for perfection at Bathsheba's Soup Bowls. There are many additional breaks on the island if you include the distant off shore reefs especially on the southeast coast. They are accessible only by boat and are easily blown out. If you have a car you can probably surf every day in Barbados!
