Guana Island is an 850-acre unspoiled paradise in the British Virgin Islands. Once a Quaker sugar cane plantation, the island is now the exclusive province of the Guana Island Club, a beautiful intimate resort built on the historic ruins of the centuries-old Quaker estate. Guests on Guana Island stay in rooms with private baths and terraces, in cottages along a ridge with a panoramic view. With the splendor of nature taking peoples breath away at every turn, some restraint was used indoors.

The interiors are comfortably but not overwhelmingly furnished in a style that comes out of the history of the island. The mood favors native stone architecture without media rooms and discos. White Bay Beach is the mile-long stretch of pure white coral sand that most of the guests use every day. And since they never number more than thirty, its hard to imagine anyone thinking it crowded. However, when you really want to be alone, there are six more beaches on the island, some so secluded they are accessible only by boat, and a very private picnic can be arranged.

Guana Island is a haven for many endangered species, including the Masked Booby, the Barefoot Screech Owl, and the Crestfallen Traveler. This is a real wildlife sanctuary, with an official designation and more flora and fauna than any island its size in the Caribbean, maybe even the world. The dining terrace overlooks both the Atlantic and the Caribbean.

After cocktails, guests gather at friendly social dining tables for dinner, or they can opt for more privacy.

Guana Island takes its name from an iguana-shaped rock formation on its western coast.

Getting there is easy. Fly to Tortola via San Juan, St. Thomas or St. Croix. Guana's boatmen will meet you at Beef Island Airport and take you on the ten-minute cruise to this very special island in the Caribbean with 7 Private Beaches

Built in the 1930s amongst the 17th century ruins of a Quaker sugar plantation, Guana Island has been painstakingly diligent in preserving its old-Caribbean character and charm. There's no glitz here. No TVs, no phones in the guest rooms. The spacious, paddlefanned accommodations and large modern baths admittedly extend beyond Quaker tradition, however. And ample cross ventilation and openness allow the scents and sounds of this 850-acre, private-island sanctuary to find their way to you.

This superb resort has seven beaches (some so private they are accessible only by boat), two tennis courts, myriad boating activities and miles of well-marked trails through unspoiled foliage to splendid mountaintops. The guests of the 15 accommodations enjoy panoramic views of the sea and neighboring islands. And for honeymooners and others desiring ultimate privacy, there is the secluded North Beach Cottage, a one-bedroom house with living room, kitchen and bath, surrounded by open and closed decks for dining, lounging or sunbathing.

Thats right, Americam Quakers - but Quakers who knew how to live! The favored native stone architecture and managed very nicely without media rooms and discoe... That mood still prevails
